Tips for Creating a Successful Summer Schedule for You and Your Kids

At the beginning of last summer I was struggling with starting and being consistent with a summer schedule. It seemed like I was always saying yes to screen time, and no one knew what to do when the TV turned off. There was chaos and frustration all around.

After talking with a children’s therapist, she gave me some tips to implement that made the remainder of our summer so much smoother. Here are some of her tips, as well as things that worked in our family last year, and what I am definitely implementing again this year. (For reference, my kids were 8, 5, and 6 months last summer)

Write out a schedule and keep it visible.

This was her most important tip. Figure out how you want your days to look, and make sure to include planned outings (swim lessons, sports camp, family outings), quiet time, and even screen time if you want to include it. Once you have it written down, place it prominently in your home! Having it visible helps reduce the neverending questions - When can we watch TV? When is snack time? What do we do now ? Just point them to the schedule and they’ll have their answer.

If you become out of sync with your schedule for whatever reason (vacation, trips, life) just pick up at whatever time it is. Your morning might be off schedule, but you don’t need to wait till the next day to try again. Just continue on in the schedule whatever time it is.

Plan at least one day where you go out of the house.

For our family this is Friday, and we almost always go to the beach. There are some beaches I go to often because it’s kid friendly (safe, clean water and sand, etc.) but I also use this time to visit beaches in new-to-us areas. This could also be a weekly trip to your local library for storytime or to check out new books. Knowing that you’re going to have regular outings gives everyone something to look forward to each week.

Create a reward system for reading.

I like to incentivize reading, both for their required reading and fun reading. This summer, I am designating a “reading hour” during the afternoon, and I will pay them for how much they read. For my 6 year old, I am going to pay him by the book, and for my 9 year old, by the page. This will include reading to their baby brother, which has the side benefits of brother bonding time and more language exposure for my 1 year old. Win-win-win!

While not everyone would agree with the idea of paying kids to read, I know that my kids will be motivated by this, and I am most concerned about them reaping the benefits of reading. I want to do whatever I can do to make it more motivating for them. You can come up with different rewards (or no rewards if you’re not comfortable with that), but definitely try to include some consistent reading opportunities for them.

For reference, I am planning on paying $0.10 per book for my 6 year old, and $0.01 per page for my 9 year old, which would mean for a 200 page book he would earn $2.00. It won’t break the bank but is a consistent way for them to earn a little bit of money.

Utilize Libby for audiobooks.

Speaking of making reading FUN, audiobooks are an amazing resource and are a lifesaver for me, especially in the summer. My kids listen to audiobooks all morning as they play, draw, straighten up, and basically anything else. You can add your library card to the Libby app and check out up to 10 audiobooks at a time. I like to stream it through the Echo dot in their room. This is such a great way to add in some extra reading time, and the benefits of audiobooks are undeniable. They don’t need to be quietly listening to it to still be exposed to new vocabulary and practice their comprehension.

If you don’t already have a library card, you’re missing out on SO many free resources! It takes 10 minutes to sign up, and then you’re all set!

Limit screen time - and keep alternate activities handy.

Research currently says that kids should be limited in their screen time to no more than 2 hours a day; the child therapist recommends no more than 30 minutes a day. One thing that can help reduce screen time is to delegate it to a certain part of the day. For our family, that was after lunch for a limited time.

One thing that makes limiting screen time hard is that kids usually feel lost afterwards; they’re dysregulated and all of a sudden they don’t have any other interests or hobbies. I like to suggest two or three options to get them started - to clean their room (they almost never pick this one), draw/color, or play outside.

Keep them physically active.

It is hard to keep them active in the summer, especially when it’s so hot outside, but kids are used to getting a lot of exercise at school, and when their bodies aren’t able to expend that natural energy, they end up with a lot of pent-up energy (which for my boys means roughhousing). Get them involved in a sport or martial art; go on a morning walk; visit new parks; do kid-friendly exercise videos on YouTube. Everyone will be happier being active.

The week of Easter is such an important one in the lives of Christians, as parents it is our responsibility and privilege to ensure our children understand the importance of this day and prepare their hearts (and ours) to fully celebrate Easter Sunday. Why You Should Travel with Your Kids (& Tips to Make it Easier)

Traveling is hard. Traveling with kids is even harder. Between trying to pack in sites and activities, you’re also juggling nap times and the unpredictability of children and their attitudes.

Is traveling with kids really worth the extra mental and physical work it will take? Short answer: YES; and here’s why:

When older, children often remember trips more vividly than their everyday activities growing up. Because trips are out-of-the-ordinary and often include fun and exciting activities, they leave a lasting impression on their developing minds much more deeply. Even if they can’t remember every detail of the trips you take together, they’re definitely remembering a lot from them.

Traveling encourages cognitive development. Navigating new places and experiences encourages adaptability in children. While it is understood that children thrive under routines and predictability, life isn’t always predictable. Traveling helps children learn to go with the flow of the day, pivot when plans don’t work out, and learn to live in the moment and appreciate experiences. This is a critical skill to have as an adult, and traveling helps hone that skill.

It creates cultural empathy. Entering into new environments and cultures not only exposes children to new people, places, and cultures, it also helps them develop an appreciation for those people, places, and cultures. It broadens their perspective, allowing them to better understand and have respect for those who are different than they are. Plus, they get to practice gratitude for what they have, and appreciation for God’s beautiful creation.

Traveling helps strengthen family bonds. Having shared experiences with parents and siblings is so vital to the strength of the family. Not only through the shared experiences, but also through the shared memories.

Now that we know why we should travel with our kids, how do we make it easier for all of us?

Manage your expectations and plan wisely. When my husband and I are able to travel without the kids (because that’s important, too), our trips always look different than when we travel with our kids. We are able to pack in a lot more activities, and usually they are much more physically demanding. When you are traveling with your children, keep your expectations low. Make plans for your trip, but be okay if you’re not able to get to them all. Include activities that won’t exhaust everyone, and don’t overplan every minute of your days. Try to hang out at the hotel pool, or visit a local park. Some of your activities might even be nixed because your baby needs an extra nap, or the kids are just not feeling it.

Traveling can be overwhelming for kids, so they can be a little more difficult, and that’s normal. Be patient and understanding, and be aware of what they’re able to handle. Don’t let your unmet expectations steal the joy from your trip. Remember that you set the tone for the trip, so keep the enthusiasm high (even if you have to fake it till you make it).

Utilize their help when planning.

One way to keep your kids excited and interested in the trip is to give them some ownership within the trip. Before the trip, help your kids research things to see or do at your destination and let them help you pick some of the activities or sites. While on the trip, choose a few options for breakfast/lunch/dinner and ask your kids their opinion. If they feel like every aspect of the trip is already planned and they don’t have a say, they’re more likely to complain or be less enthusiastic about what you end up doing.

Bring some comforts of home AND new surprises.

Traveling requires strategic planning when it comes to packing. When we travel, each of our kids gets their own small backpack with their own snacks, books, and a few small toys. Since traveling can be overwhelming, including a favorite stuffed animal or blanket can bring a sense of comfort when everything seems too loud and strange. However, I also like to buy a small new toy/stickers/snack/book to bring a little excitement and something special to each particular trip.

As Spring Break and Summer quickly approach, hopefully these tips will not only encourage you to take a family trip together, but also make it a little bit easier for all of you.

This is a subtitle for your new postFebruary is known for two major events: Valentine’s Day and Black History Month. This is a great opportunity to check out some picture books detailing the accomplishments of Black Americans both past and present. I’ve rounded up 5 picture books you can read with your kids or students this month to give them a better understanding of why it is important to celebrate these accomplishments. These books should be a stepping point to further conversations about inclusion, acceptance, and empathy. We were all made in the Lord’s image and deserve respect and acceptance by all. I’ve also made sure to include books that reach beyond just slavery and civil rights movements since Black History Month extends beyond that.

The Lord made us in His image, and yet we are each so unique and special. Hopefully these books will help highlight to our children and students the importance our differences play in making this world a beautiful place where each one of us is important.

How to Help Your Kids Set (and Keep) New Year's Resolutions

There’s something so exciting and invigorating about starting a new year. It is full of promise and the opportunity to grow. During this time, many adults make new year’s resolutions and goals to help set their year on the right path, so why can’t our kids set goals, too?

While our children’s goals may look a little different than ours, giving them the opportunity to make new year's resolutions, and strive to keep them throughout the year, is valuable for their growth and development. Kids love something to work towards, and this is a great time to set them up for success with realistic and attainable goals that can hopefully lead to healthy habits. Here are some things to keep in mind for helping your kids set new year’s resolutions.

Have your kids take ownership of their goals.

If a child feels that a goal set for them is more about their parents than themselves, they will have a hard time owning that goal. The goals should be ones they help set for themselves; they should be something personal, and something they feel passionate about and want to work towards for their own growth..

Set realistic goals that mirror your family's values.

Their goals should reflect your family’s values. Most families value healthy habits, so create goals that cater to that mindset: you can work towards eating more vegetables each week; your goal could be to take a walk together as a family each weekend; or your kids can make sure they always use their seatbelt or wear a helmet when riding their bikes. You all are more likely to stick to your goals if they’re aligned with your values.

Model goal setting and working towards your own goals.

Kids do better when they have an example to follow, so when you set your own goals and resolutions, and they see you work towards achieving them, it models and encourages them to follow in your footsteps. The amount of importance you place on goal setting is the same importance they will place on it, too.

Work together.

This is a team effort, so encourage each one another to persevere in your attempts to achieve your goals. Create a sticker chart they can use when they accomplish little goals; go out to celebrate big wins; make it fun to achieve all goals, yours and theirs.

I will help take care of my home by putting my things away each day

What is “Overconsumption Core”?

I’ve been seeing a new term popping up on social media lately: overconsumption core . But what does it mean? “Overconsumption core" is a term used to describe the social media phenomenon of excessive consumption of goods and services; it is driven by the idea that owning more makes one happier or more successful.

Part of what this term means is that the rapid rate at which we are consuming products is becoming a detriment to the environment. Basically, we are buying too much, too quickly, and companies are having a hard time keeping up with our purchasing habits in a way that is sustainable for our planet.

Social media has made it seem like we need a lot of things; for popularity, to make our lives easier, or just because it will make us feel good. The problem is that these feelings only last until the next shiny and popular thing comes along and we feel we need to have it right now to replicate those feelings. It can also bring up a LOT of negative feelings: envy for what others have, ungratefulness for what we actually have, and overall discontentment.

With it being Christmas month, it’s so easy for us to fall into this mindset of needing MORE, especially for children. While this is not an overnight fix, one way that you can help your kids combat this overconsumption core is to give them experience gifts.

Experience gifts are exactly what they sound like: a gift that provides an experience rather than a physical item. These can be so special for kids, especially when tailored to their passions and interests; PLUS you’re spending quality time together. Here are a few ideas to consider:

Zoo Membership - Getting your family an annual zoo membership gives you countless experiences. By only going twice in the year, you’ve already paid for the membership and each time after is free! You could focus each trip by going to a different area of the park, or try something new each time. Not only are you helping to protect wildlife, you’re helping your kids learn, and get some fresh air, too. Win-win!

Sports Experience - If your kids are interested in baseball, gift them 5 trips to the batting cages, or go to a baseball game as a family. If they love swimming, add them onto your gym membership and take them to the pool. Whatever activity they are interested in, do it with them and they’ll have those memories forever.

Festivals - All throughout the year you’ll be able to find cultural and musical festivals in Miami. This year alone, our family has been to a Scottish Festival, Irish Parade, Kite Festival, and Pirate Festival, to name a few. Most of them are free, and they all have tons of activities, markets, or music. Eventbrite and Facebook are great places to look for festivals.

Another idea, if you still want your kids to be able to open physical gifts on Christmas (like me), but also want to avoid overconsumption, is to consider purchasing gifts that are lightly used. For example, if your child loves to read, most of the public libraries in Miami sell lightly used books for $1 or $2 that are still in great condition. We got bikes for our older boys for Christmas this year (shh, don’t tell them), both lightly used from Facebook Marketplace for half the price of a new bike. Buying things second hand not only helps reduce products being made, but you’re also saving money, which is always a plus.

Overall, I think we all need to remember that having things isn’t inherently bad, but it’s about our heart and mindset. James 1:17 says “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” All we have is from Him, and we need to continue to be grateful for the things we have and receive.

Pumpkin Picture Books to Read this Fall in Your Classroom

As a teacher and school librarian for many years, from preschool to middle school, I have found one thing to be true across the board: Children of all ages love to be read to. It doesn’t matter the age, kids love listening to a good story and become easily entranced by a good read aloud.

Here are 4 fall-themed picture books about pumpkins to read to your class, no matter the age. These can be used with a craft or activity for elementary students, or read in the last 5 minutes of class as a change of pace for the older ones; the sky’s the limit! Also, suggested grades listed below, but they can really be enjoyed by all ages.

Should Your Child Participate in After School Activities?

According to the 2014 Census, 57% of children between the ages of 6 and 17 participate in after school activities. Most of this percentage refers to sports (35%), but also includes clubs or lessons (like music, dance, or languages). Like everything, after school activities have both pros and cons, and while some children may thrive on these extracurricular activities, others may get worn down and it ends up being more of a drawback. Let’s look at some of the pros and cons of a child participating in after school activities.

Pros:

Structure and routine: Kids thrive on a predictable schedule, and having something they know is coming up in their week can help them mentally. This also encourages kids to learn better time management skills. If they know they have soccer practice three times a week, then on those days they need to get homework done early. Honing these skills early will be so beneficial as they reach the older grades, and eventually in their careers.

Expands social skills: Teamwork, being a good winner (and a good loser), and camaraderie are valuable skills that are developed within extracurricular activities. Kids also learn to be better encouragers and communicators as they interact with their peers. There is nothing quite like a team bond.

Develops a usable skill: Maybe one of the most common reasons that parents put their child into an after school activity is so that they can develop a usable skill. Whether it’s proficiency in a sport that can later be used professionally, in an artistic ability like music that can be used to serve your church or community, or in a mental discipline like martial arts that can also improve self-defense, having a skill can help a child both mentally and in their future endeavors.

Cons:

Time demand: Depending on the activity, it can require a lot of time. Between games, practices at school, practicing at home, exhibitions, and competitions, it can require a lot of time - and this doesn’t even count hours spent commuting!

Interrupts valuable down time/play time: According to the experts, free play is also important for a child’s cognitive development. When a child’s free time is now taken up by too many other activities, they are missing out on this laid back (but still beneficial) activity.

Can trigger negative emotions like anxiety: When kids are in school, and in after school activities, their brains are set to ON mode: they need to be well-behaved, employ a lot of self-control, and their brains are constantly learning. When they don’t have a time to be OFF mentally, they can get burned out and become anxious and overwhelmed. Even as adults, we need time to relax and recharge; children are the same way.

So, should your child participate in after school activities? You know your child best, and what their threshold is for after school activities without getting burned out. Pray about it and discuss it with them. See what they are interested in or are excited about trying. Find out how much of a time commitment the activity will be, and how long they need to be committed to it.

Remember that you can always try a skill for a season and then stop altogether, or try something new! You can also stick to one specific sport that is not all year round (like football in the Fall), or a less-frequent time commitment (like a once-a-week art class). In the end, the goal of after school activities is for a child’s benefit, not their detriment.

A new school year is on our doorstep, and for most kids (mine included), the new school year can be both exciting and intimidating. There’s a new teacher, new classmates, harder coursework, and more homework. Plus, we are mourning the end of summer and all the fun we had.

We want our children to be excited about the new school year and face the new challenges bravely. One way to garner some excitement for the new school year is to read special back to school picture books. Here are five books to get you started! (And don’t worry, kids of all ages love to be read to, so encourage your older children to sit in on your read aloud, too!)

Internet Safety Tips for Teens and Parents

Technology is everywhere , and with it comes multiple threats, from cyberbullying to predators. As parents, we need our teens to be careful online since they spend so much of their time on social media. How do we keep them safe? First , you need to have an honest conversation about what dangers social media can bring to them. Second , come up with a plan of action.

While the only way to be completely safe online is to NOT be online, it’s not quite realistic. Here are some things to talk about with your teen in order for them to maintain as much internet safety as possible:

Never post personal information online, such as cell number, home address, what school you attend, or your specific location
Never meet anyone in person that you first met online; if someone is asking to meet you in person, tell your parents right away
Be careful what kind of pictures you post online; you should never be posting inappropriate pictures of yourself or anyone else
Don’t respond to rude or mean messages, emails, or texts; block people who continue to send these kind of messages, even if they are from your “friends”
Be careful who you chat with while on social media - many people aren’t who they say they are, so avoid talking to anyone you don’t know
If anything makes you feel uncomfortable online, tell your parents right away ; your safety is their top priority

Now, for the plan of action . As a parent, there is even more you can do to help your teen stay safe online:

Install family-friendly internet networks and set up parental controls
Place computers and devices in central locations in the home, such as the living or dining room
Connect with them on social media
Keep track of how much time they are spending on their devices, and limit it according to your family’s preferences
Keep the conversation open as you chat about their online habits
Be on the lookout for any strange or “off” behavior from your teen, and follow up with them; you know your child best, so follow your instincts
Always be a safe space for them to come to you; take any concerns they may have seriously and be their advocate

Remember that you and your teen are a team; you are working together to keep them safe while they enjoy social media for its intended purposes: to connect with friends, laugh, and learn. You’re not only teaching them safety tips now, but setting them up for success as they continue to use technology into adulthood.

How to Tackle Summer Reading

Even for kids who love to read, there’s just something about books that are required that have less appeal. However, almost all schools require summer reading (including here at KCS starting in 2nd grade). Usually these books will be centered around a project or assignment once your child returns to school. Aside from preparing your child for one of their first projects or tests of the year, the goal for summer reading is to keep your kids from backsliding too much and losing their reading growth. It also helps them keep those reading fluency and comprehension skills honed. Here are a few ways to help tackle that summer reading to make it as painless and fun as possible!

Start Early

You may think, “We have all summer to get to those books; let’s work on them later and enjoy our break!” Wrong! Summer always zooms by quicker than you expect, and the next thing you know it’s August and you’re buying school supplies for next year and rushing to get your kids to read those books. Instead of adding one more stressor to your plate as you prepare for the new year, start early - you can even just read a chapter a night! Do it for future you.

Pro Tip: After each chapter, have your child write a one-sentence summary of what happened in that chapter for review at the end of the summer.

Schedule a Reading Time

This doesn’t have to be complicated, but consistency is key. Pick a time that your kids can read each day, like when they wake up before they can watch TV, after lunch, or right before bed. Having it at the same time each day eliminates some of the battle, since the expectations are set. Also make sure everyone knows how much they need to read each day. It can be a set time, like 30 minutes, or a set goal, like one chapter a day.

Pro Tip: Have your child summarize to you what they read each day; this lets you know they actually read, and also helps them solidify their understanding of what they read.

Read Together as a Family

If your kids are younger, they may be harder to motivate. One way to make reading those summer books fun is to do it as a family! You can take turns reading it aloud to each other or listen to the audiobook together on car trips. By doing it together, it makes the reading less daunting and more enjoyable! You’re able to talk about what’s happening, ask questions to make sure your child is understanding, and even involve younger kids in the experience. Not only are you getting it done, you’re making memories in the process.

Review Before School Starts

There’s nothing more disheartening than your kids reading their books early (yay!) and then forgetting everything they’ve read by the time school starts (boo!). While your kids are reading, have them write one-sentence summaries of each chapter so they can read over them as review before the first day. They could also annotate their book as they read, highlighting important plot points to review later. For books for older kids, like classics and Shakespeare’s works, there are summary websites online (like shmoop.com or cliffnotes.com ) that you can use to help them review.

Middle Grade books are books designed for children ages 8-12 years old, or in 3rd through 6th grades. These books are designed for children who have outgrown chapter books, but are not yet ready for the heavier materials in Young Adult books (ages 12-18). Middle grade fiction tends to focus on pre-teens who are experiencing things that most children their age experience - making friends, moving to a new house/school, and sibling interactions. 3 Strategies for Tackling Homework

Thinking back to your own school days, one thing undoubtedly stands out (and not necessarily in a good way) is homework . We know that homework is not fun, especially after a long day at school, but it is very important for solidifying and reinforcing what our children are learning during their school day. Here are three strategies for tackling homework to make it more manageable (and get it done quicker!).

Keep a dedicated homework space that is free of distractions. Nothing kills a child’s motivation to do their homework than watching a younger sibling playing nearby, or having a parent watch TV next to them. Have your child get into the routine of doing their homework in the same place every day that has the fewest distractions as possible.

For our family, our son sits at the dining table right when he gets home from school while his brother plays outside. He knows that when he comes home, he gets right to work finishing up anything he didn’t get done during aftercare; if he has finished, this is when I check all his work and sign off on his homework sheet. This could also be a desk in their room or in a parent’s office. Try to find somewhere quiet, but not so far away that you’re not available to monitor their work and help if needed.

Help your child develop a homework plan. There are multiple ways to tackle homework, and as parents, we need to help our children develop homework strategies early on that will continue with them as they grow and the homework becomes more difficult. In our family, we prefer to start with the easier homework assignments that can get done quickly, motivating us to then tackle the longer homework assignments.

If there is a project coming up, teach your child to break it up into smaller, more manageable chunks and work on it each day, instead of cramming it all in the night before its due. This is a valuable lifelong skill they can use both in school and in their future careers. Keep the plan consistent, so even when you’re no longer helping your child with homework, their plan will still be in place.

Praise their work ethic and accomplishments. Everyone (adults included) loves a pat on the back. When your child is working hard, especially at something that they’d prefer to not have to do, give them some praise and encouragement. Share with them how proud you are of them and how hard they’re working. Pin their assignments on the fridge, and brag about them to your friends and family (especially where they can hear you). This encouragement will motivate them to continue to work hard and will make them feel good about themselves. When a child feels motivated and encouraged, they are more likely to do their work with a good attitude, getting it done quicker.

At KCS, we have an afterschool program called Homework Club ; for a small fee, you have the opportunity to send your child to Homework Club after school Monday through Thursday till 4:30pm where they will be able to get their homework done at school with the help of a teacher. This relieves them of having to work on it at home, and gives them the opportunity to learn time management. By getting it done early, they have more time to play later. This will also give you, as a parent, more time to spend with your child NOT doing homework, but instead playing and doing things you WANT to do together. How to Make Prayer an Important Part of Your Family Life

Helping our children develop a consistent and meaningful prayer life is one of the best things we can do for them as they grow, physically and spiritually. Whether we pray together gathered around the dinner table, before bed, or in spontaneous moments of request or thanksgiving, prayer offers a sacred space for family to connect together and with God. Here are some ways to make prayer an important part of your family’s life.

Talk about why we pray. Simply, God wants us to! Jeremiah 29:12 says, “Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.” God desires us to talk to Him about anything and everything , and he promises to listen. Plus, God wants to help us with anything we need! Philippians 4:6 says, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.” Whether we need wisdom, help with our anxiety, or prayers for healing, God desires to help His children.

Make prayer a natural part of your day. There are many opportunities to add prayer to your day:

Before meals, asking the Lord to bless the food and the hands that prepared it
On your way to school, praying for the day’s upcoming activities and for your child’s teacher
When God answers a prayer request
When you hear of a family member in need
Before bedtime, thanking God for something specific that happened that day

What should we pray about? While honestly there is no formula for prayer (God just wants to hear from us, after all!), if you are looking for some guidance, there is a handy little acronym that’s been floating around that might be helpful: ACTS.

A doration: Start your prayer praising God for who He is. The psalms have many ready-made praises. Psalm 8:1 says, “LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens.” He is worthy of our praise.

C onfession: We confess our sins so we can receive His forgiveness. While we are always forgiven, by acknowledging our sins we get on the same page with God about them. Psalm 32:5 says, “Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.’ And you forgave the guilt of my sin.”

T hanksgiving: James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” We should always include in our prayers things we are thankful for. Whether it’s for something as simple as a beautiful day or a premium parking spot, or something more meaningful as our family’s health.

S upplication: This is the part where you ask the Lord for specific requests. Matthew 21:22 says, “And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.” This can be anything: from losing your glasses, to your child’s success in school. God wants to hear it all!

Model daily prayer. When our children are little, we do the heavy lifting when it comes to prayer, but this time is so special because we are modeling the habits we want them to establish in their own lives. The more our children see us praying with them, with our spouse, or on our own, the more they see the importance of prayer in their own lives. This is the most essential part of making prayer important in your family life.

It's a Book Fair! How to Make the Most of Your School’s Book Fair

Many of us have fond memories of our elementary school Book Fair. From the bright, colorful displays to the anticipation of reading a newly purchased book, everything about the book fair was magical. Most children love being able to choose their own books, and the Book Fair is a safe place for them to explore and find books both familiar and new.

As parents, we now have the opportunity to make the Book Fair as magical for our kids as it was for us at their age. Here are a few ways that you can make the most of your school’s book fair experience.

Build excitement. Your child will undoubtedly see Book Fair posters along their school hallways announcing the coming Book Fair. Hype it up! Talk with them about the Book Fair. Get your kids excited about purchasing and reading new books through your excitement. This will set off the Book Fair on a high note.

Leading up to the Book Fair, create ways for your kids to earn some extra book money. My kids love spending my money, but it’s a little sweeter for them to get to spend their own hard earned money. By giving your kids opportunities to earn some extra book money, they will have more ownership of the books they choose to purchase, and they can always remember that these are their books bought through their own hard work.

Set some parameters on what they can, and cannot, get. If your kids are anything like mine, they go into the Book Fair with plans to only get books, but they end up wanting more of the flashier things by the register like scented erasers and fun bookmarks. To help curb this, set some parameters. For example, you can tell your child they need to pick 2 books, and if there is leftover money then they can spend it on those other things. If you don’t want your child to purchase anything but books, make it clear from the onset so they aren’t blindsided later (which can help eliminate meltdowns). Setting the expectations ahead of time will help everyone.

Look through the flyers beforehand. Most book fairs send home a flyer leading up to the event, which gives you a good opportunity to look through it together and pick some favorites. Not all of the books being sold will be in the flyer, but most of the popular ones will be. Having some exposure to what is being sold, and already knowing some books that they are interested in purchasing, will help your child not feel too overwhelmed when they walk in with their class. Plus, it helps build excitement!

Shop with them. Each class at KCS is given multiple opportunities throughout the week to visit the Book Fair where they can see what’s available, make wish lists, and come back to make purchases. The Book Fair is also open till 4:00pm on school days for parents to come and shop, with or without their kids. Shopping with your child will give you another opportunity to see what books they are interested in, help them find things on their reading level, and spend some quality time with them. I like to flip through the books my kids are interested in before purchasing, and shopping together also eliminates buying books that we already own or books that are too easy or hard for them to read on their own. Shopping together is my favorite way to make the most of our school’s Book Fair!

Buy a book for your child’s classroom. Most teachers will make a Classroom Wish List, and buying a book off this list not only helps the teacher grow their classroom library, but it’s also fun for the child. Consider purchasing a book from the Classroom Wish List and having your child write an inscription on the inside cover. They’ll be able to see it used in the classroom, and so will all the students who come after. What a great way to thank your child’s teacher for their hard work.

STEM: What is it, and Why is it Important?

“STEM” has become such a buzz word in recent years, but it can still be a little confusing for some parents. What exactly is STEM? STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering , and Mathematics . It is important because it pervades every aspect of our lives: science is in everything around us; technology is constantly growing and expanding into every area of our lives; engineering encompasses not only building and innovating, but also ways to keep the earth sustainable; and mathematics is in every occupation and aspect of our lives. Studies have shown that STEM-related jobs (jobs within these fields) have increased at 24% in recent years!

So, what does this look like in practice? Here at KCS, students are given opportunities to learn in hands-on ways. In 2nd grade, for example, students were tasked to build the tallest standing tower only using toothpicks and styrofoam packing peanuts. They were encouraged to start with a firm foundation, but were given free reign to explore, build, experiment, learn from their mistakes, and work as a team. These kinds of skills are invaluable as they continue to grow. In Middle School, the students’ end-of-the-year project was to build a water bottle rocket. They were required to engineer a bottle rocket design; mathematically determine how far they needed their rocket to go using the appropriate equations and formulas; test out their rockets and make adjustments to their design; and then market their product to be “sold” to the public. This project taught them not only how to build, test, and modify their rockets, but it also taught them some real-world skills about marketing.

These are just some of the STEM-related projects that our KCS students work on throughout the school year. As teachers, we understand the value that STEM education gives to our students, and are always seeking ways to incorporate it into our curriculum.

There are ways to incorporate STEM learning at home, as well! STEM learning doesn’t need to be as complicated as doing science projects; it can be as simple as playing with toys! When you’re playing, ask questions of your child: “What can we build with these Legos?” “If I drop these two different items, which do you think will hit the ground first?” “How can we organize these different toys into groups?” “How can I help you with your work, and how can you help me?”

Another way to incorporate STEM at home is by taking more walks. As you are outside, talk about what you are observing around you. Not only can you help your child develop an interest in the nature around you, you are also teaching them to ask questions and to observe what is going on around them. You may be surprised at the things they pick up on.

Reading still remains one of the best ways for children to learn, and reading STEM-related books can help them be exposed to even more science topics and opportunities. There are even some for toddlers that teach some basics of coding! It’s never too early to start exposing your children to science and things around them. Some good books to check out include:

These are just some of the ways you can help your child develop critical thinking skills and a love for learning and innovating. What more could a parent ask for? Helping Your Family Focus on Christ During the Christmas Season

Christmas has become so commercialized, that for Christian parents it can be hard to keep the “gift-mentality” out of the season. Don’t misunderstand me; there’s nothing “wrong” with giving gifts during Christmas. Even Paul says, “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying the needs of the Lord’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.” (1 Corinthians 9:11) When we give gifts to those around us, it is an expression of thanksgiving to God. The problem comes when gifts become the focal point of the season, especially for our children.

So, how can we keep our family focused on Christ this Christmas season? Firstly, decide as a family to make it a priority . This includes talking with our children about why Christ’s birth is so important. God Himself, the Creator of heaven and earth, the One who is all-powerful, humbled Himself and came to earth as a baby with the intention to one day die for the sins of the world. This is not something to be taken lightly, and it is our responsibility to impress upon our children just how amazing and awe-inspiring this is. Helping our children fully understand the sacrifice He made will help them better appreciate this time of year.

Reading books about the true Christmas story is another way to keep it at the forefront of our minds. One thing I like to do with my children is to wrap up 25 Christmas picture books, like an advent calendar of sorts, for them to unwrap and read every day leading up to Christmas. You can check out books from your local library or simply buy one or two every year to build up your collection. (I personally buy one for each of my boys every year and the rest I check out from the library) Reading a Christmas book every night will keep the story fresh in their minds and reinforce the importance of the Story. Some of my favorites include The Animals Speak by Marion Dane Bauer, The Little Drummer Boy by Ezra Jack Keates, Sounding Joy by Ellie Holcomb, The Christmas Promise by Alison Mitchell, and All the Colors of Christmas by Matthew Paul Turner.

Another way to incorporate the Christmas story into your season is to do an Advent devotional as a family . This can include reading portions of the Christmas story together (nightly or weekly), singing Christmas hymns, or going through a devotional book together like the Family Advent Devotional: Bible Study Book.

Finally, setting up a nativity scene in your home is a great reminder for kids; for little ones, you can even get a toy version for them to play with! I really like the Fisher-Price Little People Nativity set, and it has lasted our family many years. I encourage my kids to use the characters to act out the story; you can also have an older child retell the story to a younger sibling using the set.

However you decide to incorporate the true Christmas story in your home, it will still serve as a reminder for all of you about the magic of Christmas: a story of love and promise.

8 Things to Thank God for Daily

With Thanksgiving right around the corner, and Christmas soon after that, many parents renew their focus to make sure their children are being thankful for the blessings they already have (me included!). Even for adults, it’s easy to get bogged down with worries, dissatisfaction, or always wanting more, and we forget to count our blessings. While it is certainly important to be thankful on these holidays (I mean, it’s called “Thanks”giving), it’s arguably even more important to be thankful every day of the year, and to remember WHO gives us these blessings! Here are 8 things to thank God for daily in order to develop a perpetual heart of gratitude.

1.Our Savior. Jesus died for our sins! This was no small sacrifice, and one that we should be thanking Him for daily. Not only did Jesus endure the cross, with the pain and humiliation that was associated with that, but God the Father gave His one and only Son, knowing what He would endure. I can’t think of anything more important than this to thank Him for on a daily basis. Thank you, Lord, for the gift of your Son, and for His sacrifice for even me.

2 Corinthians 9:15: “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!”

2. God’s Word. God’s Word is our guide for every aspect of life, and what a beautiful gift He has given us in His Word. We read it to learn what His will is for us, and how we can develop a closer relationship with Him. Rev. Cody Wallace remarks, “It’s not until we read our Bibles and digest the truth of God’s Word that our faith truly comes alive.” Let us not take for granted this blessing to hear from the Lord Himself in His Word. Thank you, Lord, for the gift of your Word, how it is personal to me, and for the ability to hear what you have to say to me.

Hebrews 4:12: “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”

3. The Holy Spirit. When God ascended into heaven, He didn’t leave us empty-handed. He gave us a helper to be within us and to guide us into making choices that are pleasing to Him. The Holy Spirit is our intercessor and middle-man, bridging the gap between us and the Father. Thank you, Father, for the gift of the Holy Spirit, who is always with us and ready to help us with His power, if only we ask.

Romans 8:26: “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”

4. Fresh Starts. I don’t know about you, but I make a LOT of mistakes. What a relief to know that God is always ready and willing to forgive me when I ask, and that each day is a new opportunity to make better choices that are pleasing to Him, and that will lead others to Him. When we ask for His forgiveness, He does so immediately and chooses not to remember our sins. Psalm 103:12 says, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” What a gift! Thank you, Father, that your compassions are never failing, and that you are always ready and willing to forgive me.

Lamentations 3:22-23: “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

5. His Faithfulness. God’s faithfulness is one of the things I find most wonderful about Him. As humans, we fail one another. We will fail those around us (and they will fail us), but with God, He is always faithful and will never fail me. I just can’t thank Him enough for his steadfastness. No matter what is going on in my life, or around the world, He never changes, and that is something to depend on. Thank you, Father, for never changing, and for your faithfulness to me and my family; help me to appreciate this more and more each day.

Hebrews 13:8: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

6. His Gifts. God has given us so many gifts and things to be thankful for. He has always, and will always, provide for me and my family, and for that He deserves my daily thanks. I encourage you to spend some each day “counting your blessings” because they are ALL from Him. Thank you, Father, for every gift you have given me; I know it all comes from you, and I pray that you will help me to use the gifts You’ve given me to bring honor and glory back to You each day.

James 1:17: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

7. His Peace. As a parent, peace can be hard to come by; however, God promises us peace, and that is something we should always be thanking Him for. Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in You.” Thank Him today for His peace that transcends all understanding, that is not only promised to us, but is within our reach if only we should ask. Thank you, Father, for your peace that only You can give me; may I use this peace in every interaction I have, today and every day.

Philippians 4:6-7: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

8. Our Children. We can’t close out this Thankfulness List without thanking Him for our children! They truly are a gift from the Lord. When you are thanking Him daily for your children, I find it helps if you are specific in what you are thankful for. By being specific, the things you're thankful for begin to outweigh the things that frustrate you. Take some time today to think of at least 3 things you are thankful for for each of your children. Thank you, Father, for my children and for what makes them each unique and special; they are a gift from you, and I thank you for blessing me with them.

Psalm 127:3: “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”

5 Ways to Boost Your Child’s Math Skills

Math concepts are ever-present in our lives, whether we realize it or not. It can be hard watching your child struggle with something that they are going to need for the rest of their lives; but just because they struggle with math now doesn’t mean they are destined to be “bad” at math forever. Like any skill, it just takes practice and effort to get them where they need to be. Here are 5 ways to boost your child’s math skills in ways that will not only help them, but will make it enjoyable for them and build the confidence they need to succeed!

Fortify the foundation.

Like reading, math is a subject that builds on itself, so you need to develop the building blocks to really fortify that foundation. You might need to go all the way back to basic addition and subtraction facts, and that’s okay! Strengthening your child’s basic math skills will benefit them so much in the long run that it is worth the time and effort spent going back. At KCS, our students use an online resource to help them grow in these basic skills called IXL, a personalized learning resource that caters to each student’s needs. It includes skills, lessons, and games for your child to practice and master those basic skills that they need in order for them to really excel in math as a whole.

2. Try out game-based learning.

Who doesn’t love a good board game or video game? When kids are learning, but it doesn’t feel like learning, they are more apt to be engaged for longer periods of time than when they are working on things like worksheets. Besides IXL learning games, some other math websites you could check out include SplashLearn, Prodigy, and ABCya. If you’re looking at board games to play as a family, you can’t go wrong with Feed the Woozle (ages 3+), Sum Swamp (ages 5+), and Clumsy Thief Junior (ages 5+). For older kids, you can try Clumsy Thief (ages 8+), Proof! (ages 9+) and Danger Noodle (ages 10+). If worksheets and flashcards just aren’t cutting it, try going the game route and see how that can help.

3. Visualize word problems.

Some children are more visual learners than others, and word problems can tend to trip them up if they are unable to visualize what the question is asking them. One way of helping them is to teach them skills to visualize these word problems. Whether you have them draw out what the problem is telling them, or have them use manipulatives, giving them something to look at will help them more easily solve the problem, and it will give them the tools they need to do it on their own.

4. Look up math concepts online.

This tip is especially helpful for older students. Even with KCS’s excellent math teachers, your child might be struggling to understand a specific concept and they need a little more reinforcement. This is where a resource like YouTube can come in handy. Sometimes just hearing it explained differently, or from another person, could be the “aha moment” your child needs to master a concept. Utilizing videos is a great way for students to get a little more explanation on difficult concepts, especially when they’re at home and stuck on a homework assignment with no immediate access to their teacher.

5. Implement daily practice.

Math is a subject that needs a lot of repetition. Whether you use something rote like flashcards or worksheets, or hands-on like manipulatives or toys, your child needs to practice. If your child is especially averse to math, the more hands-on (and fun) you can make it, the better. If you’re going over basic addition and subtraction facts, have them count Legos. If you’re working on the area of an object, get out a ruler and start measuring their favorite stuffed animal. If you’re focusing on money, have them go with you to the dollar store to buy a few items and have them count the change themselves. If they ask you how much longer till dinner, have them calculate it based on what time it is now. When you give your kids an afternoon snack, have your child divide the food evenly with their siblings. The possibilities are endless!

Practice, practice, practice! Math can and will become easier the more your child practices and makes math part of their daily life.

5 Tips to Encourage Reading at Home

Let’s be honest: reading is magical. Not only can reading develop your child’s vocabulary and stimulate their imagination, it can also make them more empathetic to those around them. Moreover, a study done by the University of Sussex showed that reading can even reduce stress by 68%! ( Importance of Reading Skills & Benefits , n.d.) What parent doesn’t want all those benefits for their child?

There’s no doubt that reading is important, but the question remains: HOW can I encourage my child to read more at home in order to reap those benefits? Here are 5 tips to help you encourage your child to read more.

☑️Model good reading habits. As parents, it is our responsibility to model the behavior we want to instill in our children. One of the easiest ways for kids to develop a reading habit is by seeing you read. Our children are constantly observing us (sometimes more than we want them to), and when they see us reading, it encourages them to read as well. The more often they see us picking up a book over our phones, the more likely they are to pick up a book, too. When you’re excited about reading, they will be, too. Not only will it encourage your child to read more, but you’ll also get in more reading time. Win-win!

☑️Establish a consistent reading routine. Children (and adults) thrive on routine. You can google “Reading Routine” and get dozens and dozens of hits for tips, but I would recommend that you just keep it simple. It doesn’t need to be long or complicated, but it does need to be consistent. Most families already have a nightly bedtime routine, and even adding just 10 minutes of reading right before bed can help it become a habit for your kids. Another way you can add reading time to your schedule is to attach it to an activity you do together, such as keeping a book in the car and having them read to you while you run errands. Whatever you decide to try, just be consistent!

☑️Discover what they like to read. One of my life mottos as a Librarian, English teacher, and Mom is that everyone loves to read, and those who say they don’t just haven’t found what they love to read yet. One of the beautiful things about how God made us different is that we all love different things! Have your child read a variety of different book genres to find out what will naturally excite and encourage them to read. One way that you can experiment with different genres is by taking your child to the library and checking out different types of books each time. Miami has tons of libraries, and I have saved so much money this way. Not sure where to find different books? You will absolutely make a librarian's day by asking for their recommendations. Another resource is your child’s school librarian; they are also a treasure trove of information. There is literally a book about anything and everything your child is interested in, and these two resources will help you find them. And once your child finds their reading niche, they might not even need all that encouragement since they will be itching to read more!

☑️Utilize audiobooks. Who says that all books need to be read with our eyes? I am a firm believer in the power of a good audiobook. There are a few reasons why you should consider audiobooks in your home reading routine to encourage reading. Firstly, if your child is a struggling reader, audiobooks can greatly motivate them. One of the ways I helped my 7-year-old with his summer reading book was to let him listen to the audiobook while he followed along and “finger-tracked” (running your finger along the words as they are read) in the physical book. This allowed him to hear unfamiliar words pronounced and listen to proper inflection from the audiobook narrator, and in turn he was more invested in the book. When he could easily understand what was going on, he kept wanting to read so he could know what would happen next! Secondly, your child can listen to audiobooks while they are doing virtually anything, like playing, doing homework, or while you’re together in the car. The more opportunities they have to listen to a book, the more likely they are to want to keep listening. One way that I incorporate audiobooks with my kids is by playing them while the boys are settling in for sleep. More often than not, they are so into the story that they request “just 10 more minutes!” (This also ties into Tip #2, since it has become part of their bedtime routine). Don’t forget: listening to audiobooks is still considered reading!

☑️Read together. Reading together is probably the most fun way to encourage more reading at home. Bonding over reading creates more connection between you and your kids. You can take turns reading a chapter or page to each other (my personal favorite way to read together) or you can read aloud while they are playing with toys or drawing. You can also have older children read to their younger siblings. When they can connect reading with those they love, they develop positive associations with reading, which in turn encourages more reading. Something to keep in mind with this tip is that this doesn’t just apply to children in elementary school, but any and all children. Wouldn’t it have been so much fun to have your mom or dad read a book series with you while you were in high school? Your own middle or high schooler will undoubtedly feel the same way.

The overall key to encourage more reading at home is to have your child develop a positive relationship with reading, and to make positive associations with books that will encourage them to continue to read. These 5 tips will give you a leg up on getting there. Happy reading!

Biblical Worldview

Everyone has a worldview. It is the framework from which we view reality and make sense of life and the world. Our worldview becomes the driving force behind every emotion, decision and action. The question to consider is not whether you have a worldview, but rather, is your worldview true?

Some worldviews are incoherent, being merely a smorgasbord, or mix and match worldview. Barna research concluded that 88% of people have a worldview that is not internally consistent, meaning it is not coherent with itself. An examined and thoughtful worldview, however, is more than a private personal viewpoint; it is a comprehensive life system that seeks to answer the basic questions of life:

Is there a “God”?
How did we get here?
What is the purpose of life?
What went wrong with the world?
What is right and what is wrong?
What is our destiny?

What is a biblical worldview?

A Christian worldview is not just one’s personal faith expression, nor is it just a theory. It is an all-consuming way of living, applicable to all spheres of life. A biblical worldview is based on the infallible Word of God. When you believe the Bible is entirely true, then you allow it to be the foundation of everything you say and do. It involves loving God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength (Mark 12:30-31). This kind of love for God results in taking every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ ( 2 Cor. 10:5 ), and a wholehearted devotion to distinctively Christian thinking. It means being able to see life from a Christian vantage point; it means thinking with the mind of Christ.

A biblical worldview changes the way we respond to major events in the world and also day-to-day incidents. How do you respond to a national pandemic or political unrest? How do you respond to traffic? What do you do if your fast food order is wrong? What do you do when your boss asks you to lie? While those with a secular worldview may have their worldview shaken after a disaster, a Christian will respond with trust in God’s sovereignty, confidence in Christ’s future return, and passion for spreading the gospel. Through everything we continually look for God’s greatness, goodness, and wisdom.

Why is a biblical worldview important?

A biblical worldview is important because it is the only true worldview. If we reject God’s word, we fail to see the world as it really is. A worldview might be compared to a pair of glasses. If you have broken or discolored lenses or the wrong prescription, you won’t see the world correctly. A biblical worldview shows you the world as God, the Creator of it, intended. Everyone loves having perfect vision, and when it comes to seeing the world, it is no different. Sin, however, has distorted our view but looking at life with a biblical worldview corrects our vision and helps us see the world through the theme of God’s redemption.

The challenge of competing worldviews

The problem is that non-biblical worldview ideas don’t just sit in a book somewhere waiting for people to examine them. They bombard us constantly from television, film, music, newspapers, magazines, books and academia. Because we live in a selfish, fallen world, these ideas seductively appeal to our flesh, and we often end up incorporating them into our personal worldview — often without even knowing it. Barna research has been tracking this ongoing shift away from a Christian worldview. Brooke Hempell, senior vice president of research for Barna, says, “The challenge with competing worldviews is that there are fragments of similarities to some Christian teachings, and some may recognize and latch on to these ideas, not realizing they are distortions of biblical truths. The call for the Church, and its teachers and thinkers, is to help Christians dissect popular beliefs before allowing them to settle in their own ideology. Informed thinking is essential to developing and maintaining a healthy biblical worldview and faith as well as being able to have productive dialogue with those who espouse other beliefs.” As Colossians 2:8 says “See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ.”

How to instill a biblical worldview in your children

Children should be prepared to navigate the tidal wave of unbiblical ideas that confront them as they grow older. We want them to know what they believe and why they believe it. We want them to know Scripture. So how do you help your kids to think biblically?

Begin at a young age! Look for age-appropriate resources that address issues that your kids are currently facing.
Teach them that Scripture impacts every area of life, even math and science. The reality is that God’s word impacts everything!
As a parent or guardian, live out your faith and belief in front of them. Teach by example!
Find a community of like-minded believers that reinforce the biblical worldview you teach at home.
Give your children opportunities to practice living out a biblical worldview such as activities that involve caring for, or serving others.
Consider your language. Do your words reveal God’s wisdom, care and love. e.g., “Here’s what I think” vs “Let’s see what the Bible says about this question” or “There’s no way we can pay all our bills this month” vs “Let’s pray and trust God to provide for our needs.”

Since a person’s worldview is primarily shaped and is firmly in place by the time someone reaches the age of thirteen it is imperative that parents and other influencers are intentional in how they help develop the worldview of children. Why Christian Education?

The Bible is very clear about the importance of parents in the lives of their children. They are to love them and to bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord. In a typical week, however, a large amount of a child’s time is spent in a school setting. It is paramount, then, to consider the influence school is having on a child’s life. Is their educational experience encouraging the flourishing of their physical, mental, and spiritual well-being?

What is Christian Education?

The goal of any school is to educate children about life, the world around them, and their purpose in all of it. Christian education integrates a biblical worldview into every area of study so that children are taught about the world God created, weaving faith into each area of learning. They are taught how to find purpose and meaning through God’s will for their life. They learn about a bigger story - that our faithful God is actively at work and has been since the beginning. Through an understanding of God’s character, His Word, and His works children learn truth and how to show His love to those around them.

Isn’t Sunday School enough for my child?

With a Christian education children learn that God doesn’t only exist on Sunday mornings, but is constantly at work in the world each and every day. By integrating a biblical worldview into every area of study, students learn that following God isn’t limited to one area of life. For example, in science class students learn about God’s handiwork in natural laws and the design of the world. In gym class they may learn how to set a Christ-like example with team members and opponents in a game. A Christian school can build on what is being taught at church and in the home so the child will develop a deep and mature spiritual foundation. The goal is to ignite a desire in students to continue to learn about God and the Bible, preparing them to follow Christ after they leave school.

Benefits of Christian Education

There are many benefits to having a child educated in a Christian school. Some of these include:

Bible classes - Children will learn the truth about God’s Word and will use this foundation as the start of all subjects, including math, science and history.
Character development - Children learn they are created with a purpose and begin to discern how their interests and talents may line up with future career goals to be used for His glory.
Prepared for life - Students are trained to understand the truth in the Bible and then share their faith confidently with others. They learn how to defend their faith and effectively share the Gospel, ultimately changing the world through Christ.
Influence on heart - Christian school students are searching and struggling with life’s issues just as much as students in a public school. However, the Christian school gives them the climate and the tools to succeed.
Partnership with home - The Christian education system is a partnership with the family that desires their child to be discipled, nurtured and educated in an atmosphere that honors God and gives preparation to be successful emotionally, spiritually, mentally and physically.
Good role models - Teachers model and demonstrate Christian principles so that a child can learn from an early age how to practice their faith in their daily lives.
Habit of prayer - Corporate prayer is an integral part of the day. Prayer is a path to a personal relationship with God, but it also strengthens connections to one another. Teachers and students pray for each other — in times of blessing and times of challenge — to foster a loving, inclusive learning environment. We incorporate the habit of prayer in our classrooms, weekly chapel services, and extracurricular activities.
Positive peer pressure - Students reinforce positive habits and attitudes, so instead of pressuring each other to make mistakes, they’ll encourage each other to do their best.
Smaller classes, more attention - With small class sizes, students receive one-on-one attention from their teachers, allowing the staff and administrators to know each child personally. Teachers and staff view every child as a unique person created in God’s image. With such attention, they often will notice talents and gifts in a child which they can then encourage to develop for God’s glory.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. If we truly believe God exists and rules this universe, it seems preposterous to educate kids in a system that never mentions His name or His influence on this world. New Bill Expands School Choice to all Florida Families: A Christian Education is Now More Affordable Than Ever!

As a parent, you want to give your children the best education possible. However, it can often be challenging to find a school that meets your child's needs. Fortunately, Governor DeSantis recently signed a new bill that expands school choice to all Florida families. This means that you now have more options when it comes to selecting a school for your child. In this post, we'll take a close look at this new bill and what it means for you as a parent.

What is it?

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed a new bill that expands school choice to all Florida families. House Bill 1 is a major expansion of Florida's pre-existing Family Empowerment Scholarship for Educational Options. By removing income restrictions and enrollment limits, the law essentially allows any Florida household with a student in elementary, middle or high school to receive a school voucher containing the amount that their local public school would have received if they had attended. This voucher may be used to pay for private school tuition, for homeschooling resources, or other school-related costs.

Who qualifies?

Previously, only low-income students and those with special needs were eligible for educational choice scholarships. Now, the bill expands eligibility to include all Florida families regardless of their income level. Families can apply for scholarships that cover tuition and fees at private schools, transportation costs, and more.

The law further specifies that priority in receiving these scholarship funds will be given to students who are in foster or out-of-home care, or whose household income does not exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty level (based on family size, but this is roughly $51,000 for a family of four with the priority scale ranging up to four-member families with a $111,000 income). Students who enroll in public school won't receive scholarships, as the money allotted to these students will be given to their public school programs.

Families who provide homeschooling will also be eligible to receive the voucher assistance, provided their children meet certain requirements. The money is put in an educational savings account to be used for future education costs.

What does it mean for parents?

One of the main benefits of this bill is that it gives parents more control over their children's education. Suppose you live in an area where the public schools are not meeting your child's educational needs. In that case, you can now use a scholarship to enroll your child in a private school that meets your specific requirements. Christian education may have been a desire for your family but, previously, this option was just not financially possible. Now the option for Christian education is made available to many families. What is required to be eligible for vouchers?

In order for parents to receive voucher assistance for their child there are some conditions that need to be met. Some of these include:

Select the private school and apply for admission.
Meet with the private school's principal or the principal's designee to review the school's academic programs and policies, specialized services, code of student conduct, and attendance policies before enrollment.
Request the scholarship by a date established by the school.
Inform the applicable school district when the parent withdraws his or her student from a public school to attend an eligible private school.
Require his or her student participating in the program to remain in attendance throughout the school year unless excused by the school for illness or other good cause.

The two organizations that manage the state’s scholarship programs are Step Up for Students and AAA Scholarship Foundation .

How much assistance do the vouchers offer?

Students and their families can receive roughly $8,500 in assistance.
